I keep all my music in MP3 format. Right after I buy a CD, the first thing I do is encode it. Now, this is all well and good when I'm on the computer, but when I'm on a 5 hour road trip, it doesn’t help me to have all my music at home. This is where the Blaupunkt MDP-01 comes in handy. Imagine storing hours of MP3s on a portable hard drive the size of a "silver dollar".

The Blaupunkt MDP-01 MP3 Hard Drive is one solution to that problem. It adds MP3 playback to Blaupunkt Skyline and Funline car stereos. You can store up to 18 hours, or 15 CDs, on its 1GB IBM Microdrive. Its small size allows it to be installed anywhere in the car, and mounted in a variety of ways. With its brushed-aluminum sides, it'll look great on any dashboard!

There are two major technologies used in this device. The first is Fraunhofer's MP3 Codec, which allows audio files to be compressed to 1/11th their original size, with minimal quality loss. The second is IBM's 1GB Microdrive, which is a "silver dollar sized" storage medium.

Music is put onto this device through the microdrive, which is taken out of the unit and inserted into the included USB reader/writer station connected to the computer. There, files can be added or deleted as needed. Then once it’s ready, it's put back into the unit in the car. The included software covers MP3 encoding from audio CDs as well as working with the reader/writer station.

The Blaupunkt MDP-01 MP3 Hard Drive is currently available for $849.
