We recently found ourselves looking for an external storage device after our laptop hard drive filled up to capacity. The drive was only 10GB so after a couple of operating system installs and then office software for each operating system, there was no storage space leftover on the drive. Laptop drives can be expensive and it would be nice to buy an external hard drive that was both fast and portable .Imagine our surprise when we found the LaCie 80GB USB2.0 drive. This looked to be the perfect solution. We then realized that our Dell Latitude didn’t come with USB2.0 ports and quickly remedied that with a USB2.0 PCMCIA adapter card. I ordered both for < $300 (including shipping). Trendetronics (http://www.trendetronics.com) sells the drive at a very competitive price.

Installation under Windows 2000 was a breeze. We were able format a 40GB partition using the NTFS file system and got the full 16MB/s transfer rate promised by LaCie.

The drive installed easily and ran at a nice speed. We didn’t care for the external power cable (USB 2.0 is not capable of powering this unit alone) nor the loud case fan. We also found the case to be larger than what we expected, but then again we are talking about an 80GB external hard drive. A pocket drive may be a better solution for laptop owners.

The LaCie USB 2.0 80GB drives are stackable and feature hot swappable capability for true plug and play on the run. The perfect fit for multimedia specialists. We look forward to reviewing this product in the coming weeks; make sure to check back soon.

Definately will read the review :) I'm all over external/portable storage devices. I've always been in the market for an external hard drive, but have never gotten around to getting one. I'll always keep my eyes open, but the biggest factor other than price, is portability.
As I'll mostly use it on my laptop (good ol 8 gigs or somethin), and back and forth between work, the drive can't be a brick :D

I most likely won't be buying one with the next month or so, but always a possibility for future purchases.
