interesting question...
but you must understand something, to obtain the LONGEST play time you MUST practice proper battery use.
NEVER charge the unit AFTEr its fully charge(no over charge)
Let the battery drain...(play it until it wont play anymore)
NEVER let the battery be TOTALLY wiped of all power(regular use wont do this)
DEPNEDING on the battery(read the book) store it either WITH or WITHOUT power(depends on battery) NMHid batterys should be drained..Lithium should be charged.

who said CHANGE....

Battery
Battery 1 x player battery - rechargeable - lithium polymer
Battery Enclosure Type Integrated
Included Qty 1
Capacity 1200 mAh
Average Run Time 10 hour(s)

Its a chargable BATTERY... If you take GOOD care of it, it should last upto 3 years..

I'm curious to know if you are referring to the HDD120 directly here or not?

When you say 'store', do you mean having the unit lie around doing nothing? If you do, then HDD120's when not switched on but have the power supply plugged into it will charge automatically and continuously, which contradicts what you have mentioned above.

I appreciate this may not be referring to the HDD120 though.

STORE= NOT in use for a period of time...
LEAVEING the charger on, with the BATTERIES IN(after they are CHARGED) will damage the batteries.
