View Full Version : Mod chip crackdown at Christmas

On September 16, Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony filed a lawsuit against Lik Sang in the High Court of Hong Kong. The offense? Selling mod chips, a device used to play copied games. "Modification," tinkering with a game console to play legally and illegally copied software, is a practice that has turned into a legal landmine for the video game sector. Talk about scary, what company would want to go up against these 3 companies.

So why target Lik Sang solely and why now? Mod chips have been on the market for a very long time. I don't like seeing people using these since they are illegal, but my understanding is that such a small percentage of people actually copy console games (less than 1%) that it didn't matter much to these companies. Has the number risen and there are more people copying games?

That is true around here, there is a very small percentage of people who do these, and an even smaller percentage of people around here who know how to install the mod chips.
Just from what I know, the number of people around here that do this kind of stuff really hasn't risen. The people who do it now, are the people who knew how to do it awhile ago. Haven't seen too many new users in the scene.

How good are you guys at sodering and unscrewing stuff with a screwdriver?

I won't do that to any of my equipment. That will void your warranty in a heart beat. Plus I don't trust myself, I would probably ruin it. Snap on mod-chips sound better to me!

I haven't seen a snap on chip before. That would probably make things easier.

We solder stuff here at work on a daily basis...usually pager equipment.
Speaking of which...my latest project was with an xBox. It's my friends and it wasn't reading any of the disks, so I took it apart and worked on the dvd drive. Might have to work on the HD next...we'll see what happens.
Anyways, as long as your ok with solderin, have access to torx bits, and don't mind voiding that warranty..it's all good :D

They mentioned that they could be found for the Xbox, in my XBN (Xbox Nation ) Magazine. I haven't tried looking though.

I've never used one or even seen one. I'm just familiar with the regular chips.
That's a great idea though.

i actually have a modchip that i bought !!!
for my ps2.. and its an external usb mod..
then i opened the ps2.. to do that one soldering connection..
i was stunned to see what was inside !!!
i would not dare to heat that up with a regular soldering iron..
so i assembled it again.. and still havent installed the mod chip.. and am looking for someone who knows what they r doing!!!
lol
just wanted to let u guys know that its pretty hard to put the chip in ps2.. as the circuit is a surface mount one.. making it really hard to solder.. unlike the ps1 or psx..

From what I remember from the earlier machines all you had to do was soder two wires coming out of a little chip. Onboard sodering does sound harder!
