What's the difference between the two?

It means that the hardware is under warranty for a period thats different than the service. For example with a laptop, the hardware may have a 3 year warranty, but the company will only offer 1 year of in house service warranty or one year of phone support.

Service is related to LABOR.

Like your CAR... to replace the alternator is fine, but you STILL pay the time/labor required to the shop to do it.
