i'm interested in whether my hdd100 can take a 20gig hdd....i'm in the process of looking for a replacement hdd for it :/
Theoretically, it is possible. Yo can put the bigger disk in the unit, but it's a question if the device software will accept it. I mean, there is no reson to reject the disk, but you never know...

Has anyone replaced the Philips HDD100/120 hard drive ? i'm wondering if i can use a hdd from an ipod, i know they use a different hdd firmware....dunno what to do :(
i don't want to waste money buying parts that wont work :/
Why would you want to use na iPod disk anyway? It's the same as that from hdd120...
1. If you aint got the money to play around with it, BE content with what you got.
Also know as, if you aint got the money to BUY a new unit ater you BURNED up the last one, dont even DREAM about it.
2. WHY?? 20 gigs isnt enough?? thats at LEAST 12+ days worth of music.. I would store your play lists and 1 directory worth of music on a CD/DVD just for backup.
Gets it off the computer, and easy access if you want it again, or need to recover.
Some math...3-6 hours of music per gig. depends on bitrate
20 gigs x 3 is about 60 hours, at 8 hours of playing aday= 7.5 days
Thats about 15 days worth at 6 hours per gig.
And cutting the bitrate even MORE, you could PROBABLy get at LEAST 20 days.

Re HDD100 upgrade: I contacted my local philips authorized repairer (i'm in australia), they quoted me 316.00 AUD (243.028 USD) for a 20GB hard drive, which means the 20GB upgrade will work. Unfortunately for that money i can buy a new mp3 player...i'm so frustrated atm, the toshiba 'out of warranty' spare parts distributor will not sell any toshiba parts for non-toshiba products.
My only option atm is to try ebay (maybe for an ipod hard disk of the same model) or to buy online from the USA -> http://shop.store.yahoo.com/pctekonline/tomkhd20gb1h.html
http://www.transintl.com/store/category.cfm?Category=409
Looking at the format...Looks like you can upgrade to larger format, with little or no problems.. IDE format.

it takes 1.8" drives, not 2.5" laptop drives. On top of this, it can only fit 5mm height drives.

VERY interesting...
http://www.ipodlounge.com/index.php/news/comments/toshiba-announces-60gb-18-inch-hard-drive/
This formal announcement confirms Toshiba’s earlier revelation in Taiwan of the new 60GB drive, for which the company said Apple had already placed orders. The new details on size (60GB is the same thickness as current 40GB iPods; 30GB is same size as current 20GB models) and power consumption (lower) suggest that future iPods based on the new drive will be in cases of the same size as today’s models, but should feature even better battery life.

I have access to hitachi 1.8" drives locally, but these are 5v drives while the toshiba models are 3.3v so it won't work on the mp3 players as their batteries are 3.7volts.
For the moment i'll just be scouting ebay....
Pull the drive you have and check the model NUMBER... Look it up..

heh i already know what i need. cheapest price worldwide that i could find: http://www.laptops4me.com/product_info.php/p/toshiba-20gb-mk2004gal-5-0mm-4200rpm-notebook-hard-drive/products_id/2895?SID
they don't reply to emails though :/
Philips HDD100 uses Toshiba MK1504GAL 15GB drive, same as in gen3 Ipods. HDD120 uses MK2004gal, same as in gen3 ipods too. They might also be used in gen2 ipods, i'm not too sure though.
No1 tried the 30GB upgrade ? :p

I've just put the hard drive from a HDD120 into my HDD100, looks like it's working fine, detected it and the extra space all perfect.

I have replaced my battery (thanks to flautash's thread with instructions and photos)
something new about the possibility of hd-upgrade:
The original hd of my philips hdd120 (toshiba MK2004GAL - 20gb) has a connection form like cf-cards. 50 holes in two rows, 44 of them are used by the internal philips connector.
The hd I would like to buy (toshiba MK4009 - 40gb) has the same dimensions and would fit perfectly (5mm high)
But the connection form is "zif": much smaller with 40 holes/pins in one row as it seems.
(see toshiba or hitachi for details)
Any ideas for adaption?
Do, understand that a larger Drive MAY, shorten battery life.

For most of the 1.8" Toshiba range they have a model that is 50pin (they aren't actually the same as CF socket) and a model that is ZIF.
MK4008GAH = ZIF socket
MK4007GAL = 50pin same as Ipod, Philips etc MP3 players.

@dicer
Thank you for clearing this up!
Now I have to search for the mk4007gal;
Unfortunately I find only the zif-models here in the german online shops. The shop in UK (span.com) says "coming soon"...
I have already upgraded a thomson 2860 (rca2780) with a 80gb 2,5" HD. To do this I had to format the HD with an extra tool in FAT32. Windows can't do this properly up to the maximum size. And I needed an enclosure for the 2,5" HD to connect the HD to my PC.
See instructions:
http://www.normediasolutions.com/guides/rd2780_upgrade/
What will I need to connect the new mk4007 to my PC and format it?
A german would say "questions over questions". But I really want to upgrade my philips to 40gb!! Above all because I got used to the most conveniant "herbert" audio management tool on my HDD120.
By the way: the new 40gb hd has lower power consumption than the old 20 or 30 gb models.

The HDD's in the Philips MP3 players don't need any special formatting so it should be formatable from in the unit.
Otherwise you need the 50pin to 2.5" (or 3.5" / or additional 2.5" to 3.5" IDE) hdd converter commonly sold on ebay.

Do, understand that a larger Drive MAY, shorten battery life.
New generations of 1.8"HDDs have generally lower power consumption, so it is reasonable to assume that the battery life will be longer than with the old 1.8"HDDs.
Then again, if you replace the hard disk, you can replace the battery and put in the new one as well, right?
I wont say you can replace the battery, some ARE not replaceable..

My battery is already replaced and new.
But the mk4007gal is hard to get. Iriver users would like to buy one too:
http://www.misticriver.net/showthread.php?t=39860
PS: the mk8007gal has double size (80gb) and is 8mm high (instead of 5mm). Could it fit in our philips? The original 5mm model sits in a rubber holder... and the extra 3mm of the bigger hd seems to stand out in the middle not at the edges.
But sadly - both are NOT AVAILABLE yet!
Does toshiba sell them all directly to apple and sony...?

I personally would not try fitting the 8mm hard disk into Philips. Had a bad experience with replacement battery, which inflated and pressed the hard disk. Hard disk made a horrible noise until i released the cover to allow both battery and the disk to "breathe".
Battery has been replaced, but here's what happens when you squeeze the hard disk. You don't want to test it, believe you me...

Finally I have got the right hd for upgrading to 40gb:
a toshiba mk4007gal from ebay (ebay germany artikel nr 250136758596 ca. 154eur)
Measurements are exactly like the original. All is working fine. (as been said, you have to format in FAT32!! With h2format.exe)
I had also tried a mk8007gal 80gb (ebay artikel nr 140138508241), but 8mm ist too high. Perhaps with a little squeeze - but as flautash said:
