The Supreme Court has pretty much made your property rights under the U.S. Constitution meaningless. City government can now seize your property, pay you what is considered "just compensation", and hand it over to another private entity in the name of "economic development".

Why bother owning property anymore? We need a new word to describe something you pay for but do not own, because as I see it the word "property" does not apply to your home.
Here's the relevant quote from Webster:
prop·er·ty
a : something owned or possessed; specifically : a piece of real estate
b : the exclusive right to possess, enjoy, and dispose of a thing :

Why am I not surprised?
I am surprised. I can't believe this. This especially nasty for people who own property on well desired land. If a private company wants it, all they have to do is propose a plan to the city government and put $$ in the cities eyes. This is completely wrong, and now we can't do crap about it since it's passed the supreme court.

Dang it, why are you suprised? This is the way the wind's been blowing ever since 9/11. Next? Marshall law... (Don't get me started on this, I've got my own opinions & they tend to scare people, ha.)

This scares me a lot. Like Spankers said, why even buy property if there is a chance it could be taken from you, this is ridiculous.
Umm,
didmt you know..
they already COULD do this.
Ever wonder how the railroads were BUILT... Wasnt bought out lands.
ALOT of piss-ed off farmers were proof.
Its a NEW idea to do it for economic developement, and RATHER stupid.
It would probably be done MORE in rural areas then Big cities... Those major companies WANT to move, but cant find anyplace. And they WONT hire those in the area, they will HIRE those already working in there own business.

ALOT of piss-ed off farmers were proof. You're absolutely right. Eminent Domain has been with us for a VERY long time but was limited to seizure of property for "public use" (i.e., railroads, highways, utilities, etc.). In recent years "public use" has been stretched to include "economic development" but this is the first time I am aware of that this expansion of eminent domain has been challenged in the Supreme Court.
This decision fills me with disgust and loathing for what our government has become. Our freedoms and rights are being eroded daily. How can we have faith in a government that blatantly violates the precepts of our Constitution?
And... before anyone says anything nasty about Republicans... the CONSERVATIVE justices mostly voted against; in particular Justice O'Connor (a Reagon appointee). Upholding property rights is typically a conservative attribute.
What I find REALLy a bit Ch,
Is comapnies makeing DEALs with states for NO taxes, for 5-10-15+ years "IF" they build a plant there.
Soon it will have to come..
Employees that want MAJOR wages wont be working. I dont care how GOOD you are..
theres a BIG hit coming, and rather SOONER then later...Even should of happened 10 years ago, would have been better.
Our Gov, isnt even getting 5% of the taxes OWED by the BIG companies.
Id take it OFF the top and tell them to PROVE all there deductions.
capitalism, can REALLy suck.
As busines dont SEE that EVERYTHING has to plateau.. they PUSH and PUSH to get EVERY cent, but not always at the TOP, where all the BIG wages are made.
Managers at the top that arent even responsible for what HAPPENS in there company, getting MORE then they deserve.(ENRON)

I was upset about this ruling, but for some reason not suprised. Maybe because our rights have slowly been reduced since 9/11 with the patriot act and now this. Just another way the govt wants to control our lives.
As to no taxes for businesses...I read alot of articles about how states are trying to out do others to get businesses to build plants in their state, all in the name of "economic development". So state govts are offering all these "deals" to big businesses, but what worries me is that business have no obligation to remain in these communites. What happens in a few years when they decide to move their plant to China or Eastern Europe??
And with all our problems in the Social Security system...I wonder if we got 1/2 of what we are suppose to from these business, how bad would the problem be then?
Theres something funny about SS.
It is regulated to Hell.
Its money ISNT held away from the government, thanks Nixon.
http://www.ssa.gov/regulations/
If a product is available under the SAME name from MANY suppliers, it MUST be gotten from MANY from suppliers, REGARDLESS of cost.
NO best price structure, no COST control.
They have NO control over there own rules and structure. And its changing all the time.
There is a CAP on how much WE can get, but NOT for the government heads.
I THINK, it was reported that Prez. FORD was getting about $300,000 a year...
NOW the money we placed in there to be SECURE, isnt sence NIXON opened it as a EXTRA fund to be used "IF NEEDED". It is now PART of the general fund.
Each time they PULL the money out they ADD an "IOU" at interest.(What I was told)
At this point it is estimated to be (without interest) 45-87 TRILLION dollars, OWED.
I also think its funny, that they want to decrease the cost of medical. But they want to aim at Inssurance cost. I suggest they look at the cost of GOODS/machines to the doctors. An Xray machine cost over $500,000, and thats about a 10 times profit. MOSt of the machinery is so high, its DUMB(worse then rediculeous). And these costs HAVe to be piad by the patient.
Whats REAL funny, is we are talking about Socialism for SS, and communism for the medical community, to straighten them out. But, we are alienated to these FORMATS and structures from OLD propaganda.

Nice! It's great that he went on the offensive. I don't think he will be able to make this happen though.

"In 1988, George W. also began angling for a role in the acquisition of the Texas Rangers baseball team, which was being sold by oil man Eddie Chiles, an old friend of his father's. The deal did not go through easily, despite Bush's love of the sport, but it finally concluded in 1989 on three pivots of cronyism. The first was the help in arranging meetings and financing given to Bush by baseball commissioner Peter Ueberroth, a family friend. Number two was the investment participation of Texas billionaire Richard Rainwater, a major Reagan-Bush contributor.
"Last but not least was the arrangement by which the city of Arlington agreed to finance a new $191 million stadium for the Rangers with a bond issue paid for by a small sales tax increase. The stadium was to be deeded over to the baseball consortium in 12 years, after the Rangers group had paid $60 million in annual payments of $5 million.
"What sold investors was the highly rewarding stadium deal, which depended on the city of Arlington pushing the sales tax increase through in a special election and then stretching its power of eminent domain to seize the necessary land for what was mostly a private purpose."
Ya know,
The more I hear, the more disgusted i get...
excuse me while Puke...
State and city BOUGHT it with increased taxes, and SOLd it in 12 years for 1/2 to s PRIVATE group..
