Hi,

I have bought a sony handycam DVD92E. When I put the DVD into my laptop, the clips are grouped into large files. I think it works out that the clips were all taken on the same day or something. Anyway, when I look at the DVD, one of the files is over a gigabyte in size, although it is made up of about 40 separate clips. The file size means that the laptop collapses when trying to edit it all. Any ideas on how I can proceed?

Many thanks

Chris

Does Sony sell editing software that will be able to read the encrypted information correctly? It sounds like the DVD disc has not been finalized correctly.

MORE RAM....LOTS MORE RAM...
Its trying to use your RAM to store the pic for editing...
After it fills RAM, and video RAM, it uses the hard drive, at 100 times SLOWER, and for each 1 meg, it will use 10 megs...10to1...4 gig would be 40 gig off the hard drive.

You need a program to CUT the video up, to smaller sizes..

Thanks very much for taking the time to reply - I really appreciate it.

I think I have actually found out what is going on, after contacting Sony customer support. I seem to have bought a spec of handycam which is too low for what I want to do. The higher spec handycams have a USB cable which you link to the PC, and then you play clips into the PC as you want them. You then have clips of a sensible size which you can edit without difficulty.

It seems that there is no way to split the files, and that the DVD92E is simply designed to record footage and just play it back on dvd players.

Hmmm.

I think the only thing to do is to take it back to Comet and see if I can give it back and get a higher spec model.

Anyway, thanks again for your suggestions and best wishes.

Ouch. Well at least you know what the problem is. It seems like you should be able to take the DVD and edit it on a computer regardless, but maybe you can't in this case. Let us know if Comet lets you return it.

Thanks,

My hope is that with a better spec handycam, I will be able to extract the files on the dvds I have recorded.

I will let you know how I get on...

Hi,

Well, I went to Comet, and its bad news. Because there is nothing actually wrong with the Handycam, and they did not make any claims about me being able to edit easily, they are not willing to refund. They would take the camera back, but only against a new camera, and only give me two thirds of the value of the camera.

Not what I wanted to hear, but if I am completely fair, I should have gone into more detail about the cameras, and enquired about what it could and couldn't do.

I am stuck with the camera for now, so I will look at getting more RAM for the computer, and also recording in a different format (I can edit on the Handycam according to the manual) to see if that makes any difference.

Thanks for your interest and support guys.

Chris

How old is the camcorder. If its been 30 days, they should let you return it. You can always sell it on eBay I suppose. Sorry this has been a bad experience for you.

Check out the reseller ratings section of the site and post your Comet experienced there.

Thats the problem ECA, when she pops the DVD into her computer, the DVD file VOB I believe, is too large to edit, its like 1GB in size or more.

Hi guys,

I think I will sell it on Ebay or Amazon. Now I have been looking on the net, I see I could have bought it for alot less than I paid at Comet anyway, so I feel a bit bruised by the whole affair!

Well, you live and learn I suppose. Thanks again for all your help and interest.

Best wishes

Chris

I sorry to join in at this late stage.

My wife and I are both camcorder novices, and she bought me a Sony DCRDVD92E as a present.

When I opened the box, and read the instructions, I gathered that the camcorder was not pc compatible so, we tried to take it back to Argos ( in the UK ).

Like Comet, they refused to take it back, as under their terms, camcorders are excluded from the money back guarentee - EVEN THOUGH the camcorder has not been used - the critical thing so far as they are concerned is that the box had been opened.

Anyway, I was hoping that I could still make use of the camcorder. As you know, they record on to 8cm DVD, and I was hoping that I would be able to ( in laymans terms, sorry ! ) stick it into my pc, and as a minimum, copy any recordings onto standard DVD, but hopefully use DVD editing software to tart my recordings up. ( 8cm DVD only have 30 mins recording time, so I was figuring that perhaps 3 8cm DVD recordings might fit onto a standard size DVD).

Could any of you tell me if this is possible ?

Many thanks for looking.

Did you recieve any software or drivers for your computer??

There SHOULD be a way to do it.
But SONY, being a major audio and video distribution company. Loves to make things hard, so you cant copy there stuff.

DVD-R, -RW and +RW Compatible2
The DCR-DVD92 is compatible with a variety of DVD formats allowing the ease of use and simplicity found in DVD Media. With DVD+RW media there is not a need to finalize the disc (minimum recording required). Simply remove the disc and insert the media into a compatible DVD Player2.

See the last part...COMPATIBLE...They love playing with the formats and some major copy protection..
Sence you copied it to the HDD, what is the file extention..(.ext, .mp3, .m3u,...)

Hi ECA

At the moment, the Handycam remains in it's box unused, so I have'nt even got as far as recording, let alone attempting to copy anything onto my HDD. I'm hoping that I can either get our local trading standards involved ( re the no return clause ),and return it ( not likely), find out if I will be able to copy and edit, or as a last resort, like the other chappy on this thread, cut my losses and sell it on ebay.

well,
sence I dont know where you live, I can suggest that you contact the State attorney general. And the BBB, better business bureau, and the news papers.
I see it was bought in the UK, I would consider finding the Buyer protection program, or the trade administer.
In the end, I dont think you will get what you want, or that they will have the time to do anything. Do hit the newspapers and complain.

In case you havn't sold your DCR-DVD92E'S yet!!
I found this thread whilst trying to help a friend out with the same issues.
So far, using DVDSHRINK, I found you can backup the sony mini DVD disks onto a std DVD+RW (but seems to fail on -R ??).

When I discover how to break down the files to edit, I'll post again.
