Hello Everyone!

Bought a YH-820 MP3 player and when trying to install, Windows will not recognize the driver file from the CD. I have downloaded the one from the Samsung site and still no go. The other issue is that when trying to do it manually, wont let me because Windows will put it under "other devices" so it wont let me select and appropriate HW to try and install it. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I am running Windows XP SP2. I have tried on my desktop and laptop. Thanks in advance!

Does Windows Media Player 10 recognize it at all?

logically no program is going to recognize the device. I cannot install the device so it does not appears as connected. Need the actual driver.

I think you need a new MP3 player, the firware might be shot.

Speaking of, did you upgrade the Firware on it to the latest version? Hopefully that will help.

I need the device to be recognize by Windows.

First, it was difficult enough to install the device straight out of the package with the installation disk that was provided. The drivers are not digitially signed by microsoft so my computer kept dumping the drivers after reboot. Then when my computer [XP] finally recognized the device Napster did not recognize it so when I clicked on the little phone icon in Napster it brought me to a site saying that I would have to download the new version of WMP10 and upgrade the firmware. So I did. Now, nothing works. Very similar to the first post. I've had this thing for about a week now and haven't been able to enjoy it. Anyone with any suggestions????

Try to go back to the old firmware. Still, I dont know if that is possible.

At least your PC recognizes your player, mine wont.

You guys might need to return the player and get a different model. I had the same problem with my iRiver H10 until they finally fixed it with a firmware update.

Well actually my computer does not recognize the device after I upgraded the firmware so now I can't even try to roll back the firmware to the older version (if it's even possible). I sent an email to samsung's support and all they responded with was to CALL the support center. What's the point of the support email link then?!?!?

Take the player back man, I think you have a bad unit.

i am having a fairly similar issue.

i have a Samsung YH-820MS
I've installed it, the drivers work, the computer reads it, Napster reads it, WMP10 reads it. The issue i am having is that no matter what i do it is just not accepting any MP3s (i havent used napster because i dont have a credit card). What can i do? Every time i download the firmware thing from www.playsforsure.com and install it on the YH-820MS it tells me that I have an error and should call samsung, and should wipe the harddrive clean. I just wanna listen to some effing music. help!

after having supposedly formatted it, it now just pops up a screen saying "connectto pc and repair firmware with recovery utility" which i am doing right now

What do you mean by not accepting MP3's? I know that you cannot just drag and drop MP3's onto this player like you would a hard drive. Plus WMP10 automatically converts MP3's to WMA format which is a bummer. But you should be able to go into the WMP10 settings and tell it not to convert the audio format. Hopefully that will fix your problems.

Options > Devices> Advanced> and turn off conversion

You can also go to the Rip Music settings and specify MP3.

Let me know if that worked!

originally what happened was when i first attempted to "sync" a play list on to it through WMP10 it got through the sync and then the YH820MS didnt even recognize that songs had been "sync'ed" on to it. Now after having formatted the device and done the repair thing and whatnot WMP10 is telling me "Windows Media Player encountered an error while communicating with the portable device. The storage card on the device might be full, the device might not be turned on, or the device does not allow playlists or folders to be created on it."

For this thing needing to be user friendly it sure as hell isnt.

ok i've been able to get rid of that message from WMP10, i'm going to sync 1 song and see if it is playable. just a sec

thatdandydinty
08-29-2005, 12:09 PM
before i attempted sync'ing a song i unplugged it to see if i could even access the menu, and now there is a message popping up that says "connect to pc and repair firmware with recovery utility"

which i thought i did that.

if it is a firmware file i am missing can you post the link to DL it and i'll do that. If not, any ideas?

Hi,

I'm having what I think are similar problems with the YH-820 that i've bought. Did not like using the Napster software and wanted to be able to drag-n-drop MP3's from within Windows Explorer, device locked-up whilst trying to playback MP3's transferred via Napster software (not that I think this had anything to do with the software being used). Performed firmware upgrade and now have an error message that says that the firmware upgrade was not successfull and that I need to call 1-800 SAMSUNG for assistance. Tried several times to perform firmware upgrade without any success. E-mailed Samsing technical support in Canada and am very dispondent with their attitude and complete lack of understanding of both customers requirements (basically all i've asked them is how to go about getting the YH-820 that i've bought back up and running again) and of the product itself.

Technical support representitive initially claimed that the firmware upgrade rendered the MP3 playback inoperable as it turns the device into a USB hard disk drive only (which I understand is not true) and also that I should have returned the device for repair and not tried downloading the firmware upgrade.

Really am not impressed with this product.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thank you.

Best Regards.

The instructions for this are in the manual. You first connect the USB cable to the computer, then you hold down the fast forward button on the player as you connect the cable to the player. Hope this works for you.

I have a problem with my mp3, when I turn it on, it displays this message: "Device can't initialize HDD" I tried to contact customer service in Canada, but they didn't help at all. Some guy from the customer service in the USA told me that it might be a virus, which I though it was not possible. So, I don't know what to do. :dunno I hope someone can help me!!

OR, reset the firmware...
as long as you can see the device with WINDOWS...If you cant, call and see if there is a Hardware RESET..

i can see the device on my comp... but after i safely remove it from the computer and start the mp3 player, i get "connect to PC and rebuild library using recovery utility". I did that, repaired library, formated it, an it then gives me a msg to upgrade firmware. So i did and still it gives me that same msg to repair firmware... auuuuuuugh!!!!!!

Stupid question NUMBER 1...
WHAT FORMAT??? Or did you read the book, and find that 2000/XP format(NTFS), is not supported...it MUST BE set to FAT/FAT32.

IF you just SAY format, it will do it in native form for the OS....you MUST select it.

The only thing I get is "unknown device", too. Windows 2000 XP Pro SP2, Pentium 4 2.8...
Windows does not see the YH-820 player. Reinstalled program at least 3 times. Could not make it work. Why Win XP does not see it (recognize driver)?

Any help, thanks! Rams

But, is this a DELL, HP, Compaq, Clone based, and a P1, P2, P3, P4, Celeron, Pro??
Which machine if its NOT a clone..
If a clone what motherboard?

You may need the Bios updated
This is a hardware software issue...If the device works, it may be part of the system.
What i ask, is that you take it to another system, Unlike your own. Plug it in and find out.

If the device isnt seen at all, even as another device.
then there isnt much to be done.
Its failed.

If it see's it, but wont bring up the device to View, I would suggest trying to format it in FAT format...When you RIGHT CLICK the device, select properties, FORMAT, SELECT FAT format...NEVER NTFS...

If nonthing works, device has failed. Contact the company, or see if it can be returned..

There is a trick with USB..
You must install the driver before using the device..
If the device is plugged in FIRST, and windows cant find it, then windows puts a funny NAME to it, and cant find it..
IF you can, and have the USB driver, and all your backup drivers that USE usb...
I would suggest uninstalling the USB driver...Then shut down, and turn on and reinstall it..
Its either that, or you need to update the USB drivers for your computer, or its NOT compatible with this device.

I have a question regarding to your suggestion: by installing the driver, do you mean using the installation CD program? If I uninstall the program, I suppose the USB drivers will go out along, right? Or, should I look out for them?

Many devices will work with USB 1...Its the chipset.
There was a tiny war in the chipset industry over USB.
3 companies vied for the controller. And finally came to an understanding.

It has to be removed from hardware...
Start, Settings, control panel, System, Harware tab, DEVICE manager,
Its on the bottom. If you expand the listing, you should SEE the chipset..Mine is INTEL... But ANY devices on the USB channel, will be lost until windows installs it on RESET. Keyboard, mouse, printer, anything plugged into it..
IF you copy the info down...Intell 82801eb, is mine, you can goto the MAKERS SITE, and look it up and PROBABLY get a newer driver...
YOU CAN replace it, by selecting the HOST CONTROLLER, and installing a NEWER DRIVER. If you find one...

So I keep wondering why this can be so messy, when it could be so simple, as many other usb devices are... This is bad for us, bad for samsung: everyone should keep these things in mind when choosing a brand.

I am wondering about the Iriver T10 of 1 gb...

A few things have happened that has made USB kinda WEIRD..
1. is that USB has had a few versions.
2. they had a small WAR over whose chipset would be used and HOW the hardware would use it.(intel won)
3. then the almighty, Firmware UPDATES, as little changes tot he hardware have been needed.
4. I like this one...Is the almighty, windows UPDATE...NEVER EVER USE windows update to UPDATE your hardware. Yes there is a driver there for intel, and it loads on a system, but it DONT CARE that its not the right driver, going to the right place(lots of different intel drivers)...ALWAYS go and find the real drivers from the REAL owner of the device.

Good luck, and turn OFF Auto update...NOW. Go and check 1 time amonth..yourself.

Anyway, I got it, installed it, my pc recognizes the mp3 player and transfers the mp3 files, but I can't listen them from the mp3 player. WHAT CAN I DO!!!? I'm getting crazy!!!!!
thank you very much!!!!!

how did you send the music to the device?? with the included program or with WMP10

floppita17
12-02-2005, 11:00 AM
By using the WMP10. The WMP10 creates a new folder in the yh-820 named "music" and in that folder it creates another folder named as the singer (for example: Robbie Williams) and under that the name of the album ('the ego has landed') and in that forder is the file ('Angels')
so--> music>artist>abum>file
Do I make myself clear???

ECA
12-02-2005, 11:09 AM
close enough..
I read the instructions for the unit...
If you take the music you wish and store it in 1 folder, then select the folder, it has option to SEND to the device...Thats how the music is written.
It will do WMA and MP3 formats

So what you say I have to do is to have all my mp3 in one folder and then transfer that folder to the mp3 player using the WMP10?, or using Windows Explorer?
From where are u reading?
(as u can see I'm not that good at this things)

I already have that file, and that won't work. I know that it has something to do with the Firmware update but when I run it, it pops up an error when it tries to delete the files.
Thank YOU ANYWAY!!!!!!

You can transfer all the music that will fit. But, It must all be in the music folder. You don't have to use napster or yepp studio. But after you put the music in the folder, you have to run the update library utility. After that, your music will be seen on the player.

1st - Before you do anything to the drive, make a folder somewhere on you hard drive and copy all folders and files from the device. To do this, you need to make all files visable . By default windows hides all the system files and the other files they dont think you need to see. Open the windows explorer, chose the tools from the top bar. Next, Pick folder options. Pick the view tab and check the box show hidden files and folders. Now you will be able to see all files on your computer. Then you can copy all the files from the player to you hard drive. After this right click on the removable device and format the device with Fat 32 file system. Choose the full format, not the quick. After this is done copy the folders back to the device. There should aleady be a folder /music. You just couldn't see it before. Now just copy music to it. Then run the update library in the utility software. After this you will be able to play it.

You May Have to unplug the device, and plug it back in while holding down the > button. This will start the player in mass storage mode.

Hi Everyone!!
I have the same problem as the others (HDD can't initialize), and I did follow Gianna's instructions (using recovery utility), but when I want to Format my device with the Recovery utility a box pops up saying "please check to make sure necessary sorftware is installed.", what does it mean? I do have everything installed! ironically, when I want to upgrade the firmware, it has NO problem! but the HDD won't initialize anyway!

:censored Samsung!!!!

please please help meeeee!

for all of you getting

"connect to PC and rebuild library using recovery utility" or

"connect to PC and repair firmware using recovery utility"

try this link and follow the steps exactly as shown. it fixed my YH-820

http://product.samsung.com/download/820firmwareupgrade_for_MTP.exe

hope it works.

My YH-820MC player wasn't recognizing the files I was uploading so I formated the device with the repair utility, as none of the other "softer" repair options seemed to work. Since then I get the "connect to PC and repair firmware using recovery utility". Tried to repair that with the upgrade firmware option and it just keeps the same.
I was hoping this executable could help me but it's no longer online in samsung site. Searched all the web but couldn't find it anywhere else.
Could anyone please please please send it to me/post a link to another source. It's really my last hope.
Regards, Michael.

Hey, did you find the Firmware Upgrade for MTP?

michaelfsp
02-26-2007, 02:47 PM
Yes, I found it in eMule and after two weeks I was able to download the complete file. It was the only solution to fix the "repair firmware with repair utility" error. I still have the file stored in my pc and may give it, if needed, or upload it to a server.
Unfortunately I accidentally let it fall on the ground two weeks after and it began to show the "HDD can't initialize" message... hope I haven't ruined the HDD. I've just unscrewed the outer shell to check out the inside and everything looks OK but the HDD is doing strange noises.

Regards, Michael.

Attached is the most recent firmware. If your unit has the bootloader V.5 JN this will work. Here is the key. First while pressing the fastforward button attach your USB cable which is already attached to the PC to the Samsung unit this will activate the USB mode. Once activated, you should be able to see the YH-820 in your explorer window. Select the YH820 unit and find and remove the current firmware. Move it to someplace safe on your machine in case this does not work. Now, copy and past the new firmware directly to the YH-820 unit do not use the upgrade utility. Once you detach the unit from the PC and press the center play button the unit should now boot. You will need to install the Windows Portable Devises in your Control Panel, System tab and then you can use the Media Player to recognize and transfer files.

Send me a email for attach file...

You must try with the last firmware, maybe with 820_firmwareupgrade_for_MTP.exe but is not longer in samsung page.

I need this file, can anybody send me ?, after that i can copy to a personal hosting to be downloaded for everybody.

polesoft.ar@gmail.com

The utility sucks, you can try copying the firmware file directly to root location.
