Hmmmm... So I've been lurking around here for a while, and have finally found reason to crawl out of obscurity. Specifically, I have a problem or two playing AVIs and MPEG2s.
AVI Problems: They won't play in Windows Media Player or Quicktime, claiming codec error, and that they can't d/l the necessary codec from the servers. In RealOne and WinAmp3, they play, but... the music is substantially louder than the dialogue and as the video files progress, the audio and vidio get (progressively more) out of sync.
MPEG2 Problems: Audio and Video unsync in Quicktime and WinAmp3. Video plays upside down in Windows Media Player and RealOne.
There is one program that came pre-installed on my system, that will play everything correctly: CyberLink's PowerDirector. Unfortuinately, however, the only way it'll play the vide files is in a very small preview window, no full-screen, or anything.
All of these problems started after I installed the Tsunami Filter Pack. Prior to installing the filter pack, MPEGs played fine, but nothing except PowerDirector would play the AVIs.
Any ideas on how to fix?
The computer in question is a p3 1.2ghz w/512MB RAM, s3 twister, and VIA AC'97 running XP.
Thanks in advance!

I would try to download any codes from www.divx.com. It also sounds like things are not going back to normal after uninstalling Tsunami Filter Pack. Have you gone into the Windows Media Player and reassociated the file types with it?

Welcome to the community!

As far as your problem goes, I had the same problem dealing with AVI formats a few weeks ago, still haven't been able to fix it though, sorry :(

Hmm.. first powerlink is probably using their own decompressor. RealOne and Windows Media Player (Probably winamp as well) use directshow to playback mpegs and avis.

I would highly recommend installing a codec pack. The avi's are most likely divx or something.. MS does not have all codecs available through their autoupdate.

There are a couple popular codec packs:
ACE Mega Codec Pack v5.01 PRO (http://www.freeweb.hu/galgonet/)
Nimo Codec Pack (http://www.btinternet.com/~nimosiro/)

Both are great.
Install one of these and then try to playback the videos again.

Yeah, I realized I had cookies off, so even though I was regged, it wasn't showing me as anything other than a guest.

Hrm, well... I'm going to try the ACE Pack, once I reinstall. XP is suffering a slow, lingering death... Needs a reinstall. <sigh> If only there were *BSD drivers for my computer...

Which pack should I get, the PRO or the PLAYER? (I don't read whatever language the page is in.) I did try Nimo before I tried tsunami, and the installer kept crashing...

get the pro player

if nimo doesnt install on your machine then i would say that your machine is pretty sick.
