Most are speculating that it will be a video capable iPod.

I am pretty sure it won't be a video iPod. I am thinking a slimmer version of the larger player with around 80GB of storage space now.

That sure would be a lot of fanfare for something not that significant. If that's the case then hopefully they aren't shrinking the screen size (particularly if you are one who uses it for viewing photos.)

Moving this to the new Apple iPod forum. Here is what I read at the Apple fansite ThinkSecret: http://www.thinksecret.com/news/0510oct12b.html
Since coming forward with information concerning Apple's anticipated announcements next week, sources have clarified that while the October 12 event will not deliver a video iPod, a lesser update to the full-size iPod will arrive alongside the new Pro Macs.
The new iPod will be available in capacities up to 80GB and will be slightly smaller than current color iPods, sources have said. It's unknown whether Apple will keep the white casing or go with a silver version Think Secret sources spied in January. Contrary to Apple's initial estimates, iPod nano sales have favored the black units suggesting that Apple may offer another color alongside the iconic white and chrome.

How anti-climatic.

Yeah sorry to ruin it for you. I was looking forward to a video iPod too. You shouldn't trust what 99% of those gadget blogs tell you. They just make crap up to get traffic.

There will prob be some sort of limted edition mega redesigned systems to signify the end of the PowerPC machines. That would be a good play on calling it 'curtains' for the era (like the background in the announcement).

Ya it does kinda suck that it isn't something more exciting.
Only 24 hours to go to find out. ;)
I've heard that a video Ipod will be announced, if not tomorrow, then soon, because images already leaked onto internet. From what I've seen it looks very nice, just somewhat longer than regular ipod, but not much bigger alltogether. But whatever Apple announces, it will be exciting!

I'm hoping it will be an iPod that goes to your work and does your job for you as well as cooks and cleans the house. The ability to drive you home from the bars at night would be an added bonus. Even ECA might buy it then as long as it also plays WMA files. :)
But imagine the electric bill!! You would have to pay a small fortune to charge that thing! ;)

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - Apple Computer Inc. (AAPL) unveiled an iPod on Wednesday that can play videos and television shows, the latest creation in its ever-evolving and hugely popular line of portable music players.
Citing a groundbreaking deal with ABC Television Group, Apple chief executive Steve Jobs said the online iTunes store will sell episodes of hit shows "Desperate Housewives" and "Lost" for $1.99 apiece, making them available the day after they air on television.
"It's never been done before, where you could buy hit TV shows and buy them online the day after they're shown," said Jobs whose other company, Pixar Animation Studios Inc. (PIXR) has a long relationship with The Walt Disney Co., which owns ABC.
"This is the first giant step to making more content available to more people online," said Robert Iger, Disney's chief executive. "It is the future as far as I'm concerned. It's a great marriage between content and technology and I'm thrilled about it."
The new video iPod, available in black or white, will be able to play video and podcasts. A 30-gigabyte version will sell for $299 and a 60-gigabyte, $399. Extra features on both versions include a clock, a calendar that Jobs said never looked better, a stop watch and a screen lock.
"It's really very beautiful and very thin," Jobs said at the much anticipated news conference.

Not much on details so far. Such as what video codecs does it support. Dimensions, etc. Everyone's posting news so fast maybe that's still to come shortly.

I spoke too soon. It looks as though details are on the Apple website, including the ability to download a new version of iTunes. The traffic is just so heavy I'm having a hard time connecting.
It looks and sounds great! Now i'm kinnda sorry i didn't wait for it, but it won't probably come soon to my country.
Anyway, I think it's bad of apple that they pull out of sale their older models, Ipod with smaller color screen was on sale only for a few months, and i think mini's time wasn't over, neither.

Heh, I posted the new podcast this morning and called it. Go me! I don't get why they didn't add the new 80GB mini HDDs, but oh well.

Oh, lordy... 2-3 hours of video. As if the battery on the iPod wasn't already an issue... The Archos and Creative ones get around 3-4, which is 'tolerable'.
How about that Media Mac? That's pretty wicked. Well, media minus the TV tuner. Nice design though.

I did. I was surprised that everyone retracted the idea a couple days after the invites went out. I dunno. I think Apple kinda got roped into a vPod, and never really wanted to introduce one. I mean, come on. A 2.5" screen? No movie ripping? TV shows for $2-3? And it's a 200MB download for 45 min of video. That's one of the big problems. Selling a tune for $1 that takes a minute to download is fine, but broadband speeds haven't increased that much for most of us. That's alot fo bandwidth, and for a download that takes close to 25-30 minutes on a decent connection, I dunno if its practical. I think they'll eventually do a 'Sony' and make the media mac capable of encoding video from a tuner card and dumping directly to the player.
Of course this is all speculation, but that's how it WILL be. IMHO. :)
