Although I am not a Mac fan (holy jeeze no) I did find Apple's iPod MP3 player intriguing. I eventually bought the Windows 10 GB version and I am totally amazed. Possibly, in my preference, the best MP3 Player available today. Holds over 2,000 songs at CD quality, has excellent ease of use, and extars such as 20 present equalizers, alarms, contacts list, clock and date, games, and more. Have 20 minute shock protection and the 10 and 20 GB models come with a carrying case and a remote...all for about $400...$320 if you look around on-line. I just wanted to know if anyone else had a preference on MP3 players, or if you have one an just want to say something about it.

I do not have an MP3 player currently (unbelievable I know :D ) but if I did decide to purchase one, it would be the Toshiba Gigabeat or the Apple iPod.

The only issue I have is that I hate Apple and their PR reps. They are rude, snotty and above everyone apparently.

You dont' have to talk about me like that! j/k :D hehe

Anyways, I've always had my mind on getting an mp3 player, I've had my eyes set on two formats, the expandable type and the hard drive based type.

I think that's the whole reason I haven't bought one yet, cause I can't decide between the two, plus the price is always a factor.

I want something small and portable, especially something I can take the the gym. But I also would like to use it as a partial backup device as well, which makes me lean towards the hard drive based mp3 players.

I think in the end, I would choose the hard drive based mp3 players instead of the flash memory based players. :)

I personally like the Nomad Jukebox Zen. I don't have one, but am saving money for one (almost there:) ). The reviews that I've read hold it in high regard. It is very similar to the iPod, but is exclusively for windows. It works on USB (2.0 I think) and FireWire. It comes only in the 20g format, which is plenty, as it holds music and data, so you can use it to hold files in addition to mp3's, wma's, and wav's.

I still prefer the CD based ones. 700 megs is ALOT, and burning a CD with the music I want is fine.
I posted the one I liked when we discussed this before. And it had a 8min anti shock.

He also has a HD inside. And if its dropped tomuch, how much to repair it.
How about you want to change 1gig of songs. Why not just change the CD.
20 gig...hmmm! 6 days worth of music, More? WHY?

jwhairybob

REALLY... WHY?
I think the jackrabbit32, would be a better deal then.
Give me a GOOD reason to carry a HD around with me. I know that have gotten better then the OLD DAYS. but STILL they can corrupt, corrupt the data, Fail, are NOT heat tolerant(dont leave in your car, in summer), And dropping it STILL isnt a good idea. It just makes it heavier to carry, and the weight adds to the impact. So, what, it should survive a 10g impact(thats the standard NOW), that is not repeated dropping, bumping, bounceing, and being stored in you Purce/backpack. And dont forget, about the data you want to carry to a friends, ALONG with the CD for the drivers.
If you want to give data to a freind, Copy it to a CD, and be safe. CD"s top quality are only about .50-.85 each. And the jackrabbit would let you BURN it. HAnd the friend the Data, and you dont have to worry about drivers, or anything else.

I like the SlimX from iRiver and I agree with ECA. Until hard drive based players drop in price, I will take a >$200 CD based MP3 player any day.

New tech is neet. They now have a 1.5" cd, that holds the same amount of data as a 5". Think of what this would do to 5" tech.
This is the same as when the OLD HD's(under 1 gig) went to 128 gig. Myself, as I have stated before, DONT LIKE "small" items. They are to easy to lose, break, and have stolen. I hate looseing things in my pocket.

How can I answer this. I already have a few times.
I live in the boonies. Which would you rather have? .3 watts, or 3 watts. I like 3 watts.
My only problem is that Motorolla has STOPPED making them. They also dont understand ALL the stuff they could put in a phone this size. And analog is still availible EVERYWHERE. Digital aint even in 30% of the US yet.
Want a pic so you can get one.

Your answer. YES I do. Why dont you.

By bag phones you mean the ones that were about the size of two house bricks put together inside of a carrying case? My parents still have one, not in use anymore, it was cool in the day, it's kinda neat that they still kept it. But, yeah, ECA is right 3W > 0.3W

In other news my mp3 player of choice is the old RioVolt because its the one i have and it still works great. I got it just when it came out almost 2(?) years ago and it still performs like a champ.

Wow, I can't believe no one has mentioned the greatest mp3 player, EVER (imo). The Archos Multimedia 20. Not only does it have a 20 gb capacity, you can watch movies, in color (i'll admit, the screen is sorta small, but its just fine for watching the Matrix in math class, muahahahaha :D ). It also has a built in recorder function, for ripping mp3s or voice recording. You can even get addons, like a digital camera, SD and Flash card readers, and soon, a device that allows you to record TV shows, like a TiVo, or a VCR. Plus, it can take punishment pretty well. Its a little bigger than an iPod, but part of it is due to the rubber protectors on the corner. I've accidentally dropped it from around 3 feet a couple of times, and it is totally undamaged (unlike my friend's fragile iPod(s), of which he has gone through around 4 due to them breaking). :D

oh yea, ECA, about drivers, the Archos Multimedia (as with many other portable HD mp3 players) uses USB 1.0/2.0/Firewire, and is instantly recognized as a removable hard drive. unless, of course, you are using 98, YECH!!! (too bad there aren't any smileys that involve puking.) DIE BILL GATES!!!
And why would you want 20 gigs? Personally, I would like to have a 40 gig HD, because i already have around 10 movies (.5 gig each), around 1500 mp3s, images, programs such as DivX and Adobe Premiere, and even games (at school, when the teachers arent looking, i plug in my archos and play counter-strike.) That sure as hell beats some tiny little mp3 player that only holds about a CD's worth of music, and would probably be lost in a couch cushion or pant pocket within a matter of days.

How much does that Archos multimedia player cost? It certinaly sounds interesting. I personally like the iPod because it is sleek and sexy.

http://www.archos.com apparently ;)

Actually, http://www.hotmp3gear.com/MMJB%20Comparison.htm has a comparison of the multimedia (ie. video) players, and http://www.hotmp3gear.com/ComputerInnovation/Comparison1.htm of all (ie. audio and video) players, but I dunno how do these pages get updated.

My opinion on the Archos players/recorders is: they look awful, but they have plenty of functionality (recording, for once, but also video, for the multimedia range, and radio with 20 sec ahead recording (!) for the Ondio), and they are damn cheap!

So it's just a question of choice. I'd buy an iPod if I had the money and all I wanted was a player. Unfortunately, nowadays, video and recording are a must. And USB2.0 is everywhere - who has Firewire?

dang
05-01-2003, 07:55 AM
i would say every newer motherboard/comp has at least 1 firewire port.

Nice site's.. Love the comparisions.

As for USB,1&2 and firewire.

Consider that out of 10 comps I have been working on(besides MINE) ALL but 2 were P2's or OLDER. How about a 486/mod 586 chip, with 36 megs and 800meg drives..
They could FIX the parrallel port from 8bit pass thru to 16 VERY easily and raise the speed ALOT, and have something wonderful. But they wont.
