Howdy tech folks,
I'm a long time Mac user but complete novice to iPod.
Here's the problem,
I was given a 5 gig scroll wheel iPod. It was never used and has the original "sampler" playlists in it.
swre is v.1.0 and Apple doc on the screen says 2001.
this iPod works perfectly on it's own, charges w/ a.c. and stays well charged.
When I connect it to my computer with it's firewire cable (which works perfectly elsewhere) I get the Apple insignia and "iPod" on the screen and nothing else happens.
I'm guessing that is because this iPod would have been used (2001), "if" it had been used, with a computer running sys 9 and so is not recognized by my Macs that are running 10.3.9.
All directions say to reset this iPod, aka, wipe the drive, it needs to be connected to the computer.
So - here's the question;
How do I get my computer to recognize this iPod so that I can wipe it clean, install current software and put some things on it that I would listen to?
OR-
is there a way to wipe it and start over without being connected to the computer.

Some may ask "why bother, it's old and small?", but to someone who listens to music 1 cd at a time, and sometimes even 1 lp side at a time, 5 gigs is alot of music.
Thanks in advance for any direction.
