Which of these satellite radio companies is better and why? If I bought a car stereo with satellite radio, which would I want?

Archon

look at each and see which has more stations that you would listen to. Do you want Celtic dance music? African classical rap music? etc....

Haven't really looked into it that much man, but I know that our store has the option of selling XM radio, and we have been considering it, but it might be a waste around this area. Haven't found many customers that are interested in it.

But here at work, the manager and I both have headunits that support xm radio.

Find some good links so we can compare the two. Maybe there is even an article that does just that.

That totally sucks man, I am glad they caught the guy. So in relating this to the thread, which satellite system did you have?

Here are two boards that cater to satellite radio enthusiasts, both SI and XM:
XM Fan (http://www.xmfan.com/index.php)
Club XM (http://www.clubxm.com/phpBB/index.php)
I chose XM over SI because only XM was available at the time.
SI has 60 commercial free music channels.
XM has 35 commercial free music channels plus 35 with no more than 5 minutes of adds per hour.
Subscription rates are similar, with both constantly offering discounted activation specials.
The one channel that SI has that I wish XM would get is:
World Radio Net (http://www.wrn.org)
General feeling is that XM has slightly better audio.
Either service would be a much bigger improvement over FM than FM was over AM.
Satellite radio will become as normal as cable and satellite TV have become.

I'm new here, so I don't know how you guys feel about self-links, but a friend and I just got into satellite radio (he got XM and I went Sirius) and we really dig it. The above mentioned boards are good for fans, but we couldn't find any decent blogs, so we decided to start one: http://www.satradioblog.com

dont worry, be happy.

But what croock would steal a car with a CD/MP3/ player, XM/SI radio, and a great set of speakers, Not caring WHAT the car looked like.

Which one has HOME USE.

stop using CAPS! God!

I was using SI, the other day, and it was weird... there were random points where it would just lose signal. over and over again, in the same places. Not in a valley, or surrounded by buildings... nothing. It was weird.

> Which one has HOME USE.

ECA: If you were asking a question... Both of them have home use. You can buy a receiver, then in some cases you buy either a car or home adaptor (which adds to the up front cost, but it's nice to be flexible). XM's Delphi receiver actually has a boombox "adaptor" for maximum portability (but I have no idea what the battery life might be).

Ioman

I am waiting for home recievers to have the satellite tuners built in. I wouldn't mind it for the car either, but I do not like adding it as an aftermarket product. I think the adapter looks goofy.

Wait no longer. Many manufacturers are offering XM-ready and/or Sirius-ready decks in their lines. Toyota and GM went with the X, Ford went with the dog. Others went with either or both or left it up to the dealers. Major manufacturers such as Pioneer, Alpine, Sony, Panasonic, and others are also on the bandwagon. With a sat-ready deck, you only need to have a "black box" hidden somewhere like behind the dashboard or in the trunk, and an antenna installed, preferably on the roof. As for looking goofy, the Delphi Skyfi is a nice one-piece plug & play unit for XM, you can slide it into a car mount, a home mount, and a boom box portable mount. You will only need to pay one service fee, as you will only be using a single tuner and single decoder chipset. The display on this unit is better than anything you've seen, as it shows the channel number, channel name, artist name, title of the piece, and an auxilliary field, and it does it all on a single screen without scrolling. I believe Sirius offers a similar product.

So I decided to get Sirius installed in our new car. Sirius has less music channels than XM Radio, but more talk shows. The music channels they have are pretty good I think. I read that XM has been around a year longer and has more subscriptions, so I am going for the underdog here. Gotta keep the competition alive!

I'm leaning towards Sirius too because it's international news and talk radio coverage seems slightly better. XM definitely seems to have the momentum though.

Ioman: Get sirius if you like sports - no question. It has EVERY NFL game twice (one channel with home team announcers, the other with the away announcers) as well as a 24-hour NFL channel.

They also do NBA and NHL. There is now a new 2.5 generation chipset wave of products for sirius coming out that are smaller and cooler. One, the sportster, will be carried by best buy. It should be showing up this week or next.

The sportster has some unique features including live scores on the display.

I have been on this forum prodding and poking for info:
http://www.siriusbackdoor.com

Here is the sportster receiver snapped into its boombox:

Well we wound up getting Sirius in our new vehicle and I am absolutely in love with it. The signal drops once in a while when going under overpasses, but otherwise the quality is great. I like their music stations a lot too. The radio personalities/Dj's could be better though.

No problem, I have done a lot of research on satellite radio (will review it for the site too) so ask away.

I did not install it myself, it came integrated in the Nissan Murano we purchased. This means it has a direct connection with the screen in the car versus uses FM modulation which the aftermarket version uses.

I am temped to get the xm just for the NASCAR/Race station. If Si. had a station that I could get nhra rules updates and races I'd jump all over that but in the mean time I'm just gonna think about it some more

I have had XM in my vehicle for about 2 years. Better audio than Sirius and very few drop outs. I can set under an overpass and not have drop outs at all. Reviewing the channel lists, I like the XM lineup better too.
