It almost sounds like the vapor which crystalizing, gains in density much like hail does. Bouncing around up there for a while until it is too heavy and falls. Why haven't we heard of this before now?

We've all seen hail before, that doesn't bother. It's the sheer weight. 22-35lbs of ice falling from 2-4 kilometers up would leave a serious hole in something.
