Philips’ ShoqBox Personal Sound System is a clock radio, MP3 player and a speaker system all in one little device. It could be your new favorite travel companion.

This looks pretty cool. I wish it came with more storage. I also would not want to take my HDD based MP3 player AND this with me on the road, so I would want a single solution. There are only so many CE gadget I can take with me! Laptop, Cell Phone, MP3 player, and then maybe my PSP and now this. Way too many.

I saw a demo of a ShoqBox at Best Buy. I was impressed with how loud and clear the unit could play for its small size. It won't rock you out of the room but you'd be hard pressed to find something that small that could boom any louder and sound as good.

My father was in the hospital for a few weeks and I wanted him to have some music to listen to. Since they insisted anything we got him had to run on batteries and we could get no radio reception in his room this seemed like a nice solution. I had a hard time finding reviews of the ShoqBox at the time so its nice to see you guys post one.

My one concern was that it had built-in rechargable batteries. I would assume this normally is considered a positive. However, in my case, since the unit could not be plugged into the walls to charge I wanted to be able to just buy new batteries and pop them in (I decided that I could just take it home every couple of days and charge it.) Also, as mentioned elsewhere in this thread, the ability to add additional memory cards would be nice (there is mention of a unit with 512MB but I've never actually seen it for sale anywhere including Philip's own web store.) A remote would be a nice addition too.

I ended up not getting it because a few days later I was talking to one of the nurses about it and she mentioned the hospital was having some problems with theft. She suggested I not get anything "nice".

Thanks for the detailed feedback. The rechargable batteries would bother me as well. I feel like Philips left it short by not including a memory card slot as well, it seems like one of those common sense things that should be included.

Sam's Warehouse has had the ShoqBox for $90 for the last month or so and Best Buy has lowered their price to $99 (initial price was $130-$150 depending on where you bought it.) Philips is probably trying to clear them out (I'm just guessing.) I think these are reasonable prices for what you get so I picked one up yesterday at Sam's. I've been wanting something small that I can sit on my desk at work and play MP3's and radio with so this fits the bill nicely. I still wish it had more memory but oh well. AM radio would be nice as well as there is a local AM sports talk station that I like to listen to during the day sometimes (it's very easy to find MP3 players that play FM but for some reason I have yet to find one that plays AM...am I the only one that sometimes listens to talk radio?) I haven't even opened the package yet but I think I will be pleased with it.
