The S3800 was very irritating by it's lack of ability to focus in even normal indoor lighting (the S3000, which my brother-in-law owned, had this problem as well.) After contacting Fuji they actually acknowledged the problem and said that the problem could be alleviated by switching to Macro mode. This actually worked as even when the camera would indicate it could not focus the picture would turn out sharp. However, you cannot zoom in macro mode (the camera would automatically adjust the lens to it's widest angle.) This annoyance was offset by the gorgeous pictures it took. The only complaint I have about the Fuji S5000 is its lack of a "fine" setting to reduce JPEG compression. Even the S3800 had this which allowed the S3800 to produce slightly better pictures in my opinion. Other than that the camera has been near perfect. We even use it to make video quite often (it takes good video with sound for a camera but is by no means a replacement for even a mediocre digital video camera.) The 10x zoom lens is awesome. There are times I wish the camera were smaller but that's the sacrifice you make when you chose to go with an SLR and is not a fault of Fuji. I have "auditioned" a few of the Fuji compact models and haven't been quite as impressed with the photo quality although I will admit it's been awhile and I haven't looked at too many of the current models. "Given all these announcements have we reached a point of diminishing returns where the megapixel horsepower race has become meaningless?" Uh...YES!!! I think it's crazy that companies keep increasing the megapixel size. Spend the money on things that produce better picture quality. Unfortunately Joe Consumer equates megapixels with photo quality so the companies feel they have to keep piling on the pixels. I've seen some 2MP cameras that take much better pictures than many 4MP cameras, you just can't blow up the 2MP pictures as much. 3.2MP is fine for 8x10 and 4MP of course will go even larger. How often are you printing larger than 8x10? The only advantage I can think of is if you like to crop A LOT. And even then 9MP is overkill. |
