AT&T's "secret" 10 dollar DSL "offer"

Anyone else here taking advantage of the FCC-mediated Term Agreement plan?

I ordered mine last Wednesday.
By Tuesday I had the free modem kit.

The plan is not publicized by AT&T.
It can be read about by googling.

If there are any other folks who are still stuck with dial-up
and who have an AT&T or BellSouth home line,
and who reside in the 22 States qualifying for the "offer",
I can offer my limited-experience so far.

The service is a boon, for anyone used to dialup-only.

Now I get nearly 700mbs and can watch at last
YouTube and Google videos in streaming form.

This is great so far.
And you know, it's gonna get better yet: For you folks without land lines,
AT&T is forced...ahem, AT&T "agreed" to supply nude dsl service to you soon. Don't look for advertisements, though. They don't want you to know about it, natch.

There are no up-front charges
When the first new phone bill arrives I'll learn then
of any tacked-on charges above the $10/month fee.

The modem is free, no cost, just as long as you pay up on time for one year.

It's a high quality Westell modem and kit with plug-in filters, all the cords needed, instructions well presented, all that.

If I'm not mistaken, and if I can continue to be satisfied with low-tier dsl service, I will be allowed to keep this service for thirty months! And so, that's two and a half years of broadband with no-cost modem, a steady service unlimited, other than by its nominal-max 786kbs downstream speed,
all for the time-deferred payment of just three bills in total,

so it seems.

I was, and am Shocked that it has been working.
Most of those that have been on the site along time, watch it randomly, just to see if it changes. It didnt move for ALONG time.

I do the speedtest thing daily.
It's always at 690 to 699kbs.
So far, so trustworthy.

When the first phone bill comes I'll report whether there are hidden fees tacked on.

Im 47, handicapped sence birth, Fought it till I was 33, then Fought Social security for 6 years.
Been playing with computers sence the Teletype machines in School, and then the C64/Vic20/Timex sinclear/ main frames/Pet... Iv had the Best machine in the world(amiga) and am Suffering with the Worset(intel).. Was to cheap to let OTHERS fix my machines so learned to do most of it myself.

Minor update: this 786kbs service is working clean and steady.
It always clocks, however, at 690 to 699kbs.

I wondered why--why not 786, ever?

I wondered: say, if I were paying for our neighborhood's maximum-possible service speed of 1.5, would I even get close to that number?

The answer came the other day.
Another tech was seen at the junction box several hundred feet from my home.

I posed the questions to the tech.

"The full speed -is- verified right here at this box. This area's subscribers have their 786 OR their 1.5mips verified-available right here at this box. Now, your house is so-far away, old style buried cable runs to your house. All the speed loss is in that short run. We don't have fiber optic cable to this box, not yet. Anyway, if you paid for the 1.5 service, you'd then get, say 1.3 or 1.4mips into your modem. It's proportional. Probably, 1.4 is what you'd have."

Well, that was good to learn.
I'm very happy with 786kbs, even at the 690-actual. It's more than ten times faster than dialup ever was. And, no more need to dial-connect.

The other day I router-connected my dad's computer upstairs, to this line;
a simple wired router. No hassles, it all worked fine!

Now two computers get broadband for $5 each per month. Good deal.

And I have pointed out Long ago, and even today...
The only way to get that Line replace, the short line, is IF it broke someplace in the middle. You then would probably get a newer Wire installed.
corps wont touch anything to Currnt updated or advanced Format unless its broken or they are paid or forced to do it.
