Winamp 5 and RealOne are extremely easy to use

Winamp 5 rips to 320kbps
Realone starts at 96 i think and you have to d/l a plugin to go up to 160. Kinda annoying

Does RealONE really limit the bit rate you convert CD's too? My copy doesn't do that and I can save them to 192Kbps without a hitch. My copy might have been registered or payed for though, so maybe that is it.

I have been using Winamp5 and it is very simple to use and the songs sound great when they are done.

I use Winamp5, I used to use dbPowerAmp, which I still have for converting things between formats, but Winamp is so spiffy (lol, get Pro! hehe)

Does Winamp 5 connect to the net to get the proper ID tag info?

IOMan - yes, it's the free version of RealOne that limits rips to 96 kbps.

I'm using MusicMatch 8 right now. I haven't used anything else properly to compare with, but it's working well for me.

Yeah Winamp5 will automatically connect to the net to grab the ID3 tag from the CDDB. Both when playing CD's and before you rip them.

RealPlayer's initial install supports 96kbps, as most free products do because the company has to pay for the high-bitrate encoder license.

However, there is a free download once you've installeed RealPlayer that enables high bitrate encoding (up to 320kbps).

After install, just click [url=http://forms.real.com/real/jukebox/320k_register.html?src=r1central]here/url] (should work)

If that link doesnt work, follow these steps:

1) go to http://guide.real.com
2) click on "RealPlayer CENTRAL" link at the bottom of the left navigation block
3) on the right-side of the site, there will be a block called "Check this out". Listed under it is "Free 320k mp3 encoding Plug-in" link. Click it and it will install.

"Unfortunately, the high bit-rate MP3 Recording Plug-In is no longer available for free.

To get the high bit-rate MP3 Recording plug-in, you must first purchase our premium player at http://www.real.com/realone/plus/index.html?alttmpl=yes and then return to this page to activate your MP3 Recording plug-in."

bummer..
