More info on FISH:

eWeek has posted an interesting article about FISH memory and their lack of representation at the Photo Marketing Association show in Las Vegas, an assembly of manufacturers that FISH would be targeted at.

From eWeek's article:

Checking with digital camera vendors at the show, eWEEK.com couldn't find a single company that had even heard of the specification, let alone planned to use it. And for its part, the UMTA has yet to name one company backing the FISH format.

"I suppose it's possible that someone higher up has heard of this, but it's certainly not a publicly announced initiative, and something I doubt has any great traction," one camera executive said, who asked not to be identified.

So what do you think? Is FISH for real? Is it just a bunch of marketeers trying to sell an idea? Will the majority of people really switch?

3 coments.
1. they already stated they will come out with 2 formats for it.
standard fish and little fish. that aint standardization.
2. SMALLER isnt better(all the time). So what its smaller. After a point its going to be a pain to find it inyour wifes purse, or your own pocket, and god forgive you if you have a hole in your pocket.
3. Dielectric responce. know what that is? Take a battery and keep it near your body for a week, NOW try to use the batery. It dont work. So carry around a anti static holder along with it.

Thats crap, There is already a flash memory card that plugs directly into the USB port, the Intelligent Stick from PQI.

www.pqi1st.com, or www.pqi.com.tw.

Then again, FISH devices should be able to accept I-Sticks as well as FISH memory.

Well the main problem I see with the FISH company and their products is that they lack any sort of marketing or creative department. Their website looks like it is designedwith FrontPage, and their marketing is terrible. How can you launch a new product and not even show up at the PMA (photo marketing association) which is the exact market they are targeting.

This may be a case of engineering running the company. And some of the customer quotes they have on their website are hilarious.

I wish my GPS had FISH! It's such a pain to find that cable (to upload information).

Yeah mine runsaway too....

The number one problem with my current camera is transferring photos to my computer. The number two problem is that [the camera] takes too long between pictures. FISH sounds like the answer.

What does he mean takes too long between pictures!? Sounds like a cheap camera.

Every company has their own form factor. The product may not be new but standarizing the form factor and marketing as a viable alternative to other means of storage for your portable device is a new idea.

The MAIN benefit of having this type of storage device in your portable electronics is being able to easily transfer the files to your computer without an adapter.

The amazon link shows a bunch of USB Keydrives. The I-Stick is smaller than most flash memory cards and is way thinner than FISH

i'm down for a standard for media used in portable devices. It sucks how some digital cameras, mp3 players, etc use one of 3 types: compact flash, smart media or a sony memory stick. having one standard storage type would not only bring prices down but allow you to get that cool camera and use the same memory card as your mp3 player.

PQI's I-Stick already utilizes this concept. The I-Stick is thinner, lighter, smaller, and until FISH comes up with a price...less expensive.

The Process is::

Come up with a standard form factor everyone can agree on, make it official, implement in various devices

I think they are still trying to decide what that form factor is. Does anyone know if ANSI has done any work on deciding which form factor that they like??
